DEPART
SYDNEY WITH INDIAN PACIFIC TRAIN FOR BROKEN HILL |
|
| Leave

through the magnificent Blue Mountains, then through country New South
Wales and the outback to Broken Hill. Your accommodation tonight will
be a First Class Cabin aboard the train. |

ABORIGINAL
ROCK ART-KAYRUNNERA STATION |
   |
| You
will be collected at the Broken Hill train station upon arrival of
the Indian Pacific. Leaving Broken Hill we travel north for 120 kilometres
to a working “outback” sheep station. This family owned
property is unique as it incorporates a privately imposed and now
registered natural sanctuary for fauna and flora as well as an abundance
of Aboriginal rock art. Your guide will show you some wonderful things,
including plenty of wildlife like big red kangaroos, emus, eagles
and much more. We then look for a nice place to have lunch, before
we continue our journey on remote station roads, through ever changing
countryside, to Kayrunnera sheep station, our base for the next two
nights. Enjoy a bush tucker BBQ with the station owners and relax
in the homestead. |

FRI/MON |
SHEEP
STATION ACTIVITIES |
   |
| A
full day of activities around an operating outback sheep station today.
These activities will vary depending on the time of year you visit,
but may include: a water run, checking fence lines, mustering sheep
or helping out at the woolshed. Lunch will be in the bush where we
have ample opportunity to view wildlife such as kangaroos, emus and
wedge tailed eagles. We return to the homestead mid to late afternoon
to relax prior to a traditional camp oven dinner! Overnight in the
homestead again tonight. |

SAT/TUE |
WHITE
CLIFFS OPAL FIELDS |
   |
| It
is only a short journey this morning to the White Cliffs Opal Fields
- the oldest commercial opal fields in Australia! The day is spent
inspecting this extraordinary outback settlement. Learn how and why
the community lives underground. Visit some underground opal galleries
and perhaps purchase one of the magnificent local opal products. See
the 'Old Field' where in search for “colour” over 50,000
holes have been dug since the 1890’s. We explore the fields,
meet locals, even a chance to find your own piece of precious stone,
a fun day indeed. Our accommodation for the night is in an “Underground
Dug Out”. |

SUN/WED |
BROKEN
HILL AND SURROUNDS |
   |
| Returning
to Broken Hill prior to lunch we enjoy the views of the city from
the café atop the Line of Lode. The afternoon is spent visiting
such attractions as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the famous outback
artist gallery of Pro Hart, the Sculptures and general sight seeing.
Your guide is very knowledgeable about the town and its history, so
if you have any specific request of things to see, please just ask
him! Al la carte dinner at JJ’s Restaurant in the Broken Hill
Legion Club. Overnight at the Royal Exchange Hotel. |

BROKEN
HILL - KINCHEGA NP - MENINDEE |
   |
| If
available this morning we will visit the School of the Air to sit
in on a normal school day lesson. We then leave Broken Hill behind
and we travel to the Kinchega National Park with its spectacular Menindee
Lakes. The surface area of these lakes is seven times greater than
that of Sydney Harbour! Taking the ‘scenic drive’, we
follow the mighty Darling river where native bird and animal life
abound among the enormous river red gums. After lunch we visit the
small outback township of Menindee, the last stop for Burke and Wills
(early explorers) on their fateful journey into the unknown. We stay
on in Menindee tonight to enjoy the peace and serenity of the outback.

TUE/FRI |
MUNGO
NP - MILDURA - MELBOURNE |
  |
| After
a wholesome breakfast we make our way to the Mungo National Park via
Pooncarrie, another old river port town along the Darling River. Continuing
our journey toward the World Heritage Area of the ancient Willandra
Lakes, we arrive at Mungo National Park with its amazing "Walls
of China" and spectacular wildlife. This almost lunar like landscape
will inspire the photographer and enchant the nature lover. In the
afternoon we drive to Mildura where you will be transferred to the
airport, in time for departure with REX Airlines flight to Melbourne.
(Flight ZL497, 16.45/18.00 is included in tour price.) |
